Charmaine Munroe aka Macka Diamond spent her formative years in Portmore, Jamaica. While she was a student at Holy Childhood high school, she nursed dreams of becoming a DJ and often missed classes, in order to practice singing and deejaying.
The reality of her father being a music producer is supposed to have had a significant influence upon shaping her choice of career.
Macka Diamond is a very talented DJ and has a number of singles to her credit, many of which have occupied leading positions on Jamaican music charts. These include ‘Done Already’ based on the Thriller riddim for Echo Production/ VP Records; ‘Try Wid Him’ based on the Mad Guitar riddim for Don Corleon/ Greensleeves Records; ‘Make Dat Money’ based on the Scoobay riddim for 3,5,7 Records/ Greensleeves Records; ‘Know Yuh Friend’ based on the Dancehall Rock riddim for Kings of Kings/ VP Records; ‘Teck Kon’ based on the After Effect riddim for G-String label; ‘Woman We Name’ based on the Flava riddim; ‘Boopsie’ based on the Spanish Fly riddim for Dem Youth Deh/ Greensleeves Records.
Besides having performed abroad in the United States and in Antigua, she has performed in shows including Red Stripe/ Reggae Sumfest, Sting, Jamaica Spring Fest and Teen Fest. After graduating from high school, she decided to pursue a career in music. She came into contact with Lady Junie, who was quite impressed with her talent and helped her find producers.
She, at first, decided to call herself Lady Charm, but had to change the name to Lady Mackerel, on the insistence of the producer of her first single, titled ‘Don Girl’. ‘Sugar Plum’ for the label Stone Love and ‘Oh What a Pity’ for the label Kingston 11 were among the singles of hers that were released subsequently.Greensleeves Records, with whom she signed a contract in 2004, released her debut album. It was released under her new name i.e. Macka Diamond.
Greensleeves released ‘Money-O’ in 2006 and it included the tracks titled ‘Murderer’, ‘Think Mi Easy’ and ‘Bun Him’.
We are waiting to see what Macka Diamond has in store for the 08.
