We all remember the box office hit movie, “How Stella got her groove back”. The movie starring Angela Bassett and Taye Diggs was based on the real life courtship and romance of the author, Terry McMillan’s relationship with Ex-husband, a Jamaican native, Jonathon Plummer. For those who did not know, the two met on vacation, fell in love and not long after they wed. The fairytale story did not have a happy ending, however. In 2005, after 6 ½ years of marriage, Plummer admitted to his wife that he was gay. McMillan, obviously distraught filed for divorce in January of 2006. Plummer sought spousal support to maintain his lifestyle which settled in court for an undisclosed amount. March of 2007 McMillan went back to court suing Plummer for $40 million dollars citing an intentional strategy to ruin her reputation during divorce proceedings.

To make a long story short Jonathon Plummer presently a hairstylist has just released a new book titled “Balancing act” which is currently being sold in Barnes &Noble and Amazon. The book is a fiction version of Jonathon’s life with ex wife Terry McMillan. Not everyone has been very receptive to this book; in fact a bookstore in Oakland California has refused to carry his book. Terry McMillan who still seems to be licking her wounds is very outraged by this new book. Here are a few words from Terry’s description as to what she think of the book and others like it; exploitative, destructive, racist, egregious, sexist, base and tacky.

Divorce a lot of times can be very painful and ugly but I imagine it’s even more damaging to find out your partner is gay after being married so long. There is no question after such a discovery one must feel a great sense of betrayal and deception on the part of the spouse who vowed to love and respect you all the days of your life. How to move on and believe in love again? There is a saying, “you have to meet a few bad ones before you find that right one”. So I say to Terry, I hope that you will find love, peace and happiness for the future.
