Where ever Kartel seems to go trouble seems to follow. Over the weekend Kartel got into an altercation with Jipsy of the Bembe Squad. The incident occurred somewhere around 1am when the DJ took the stage playing his set and making such statement as “Mi bun out tight pants bwoy already, mi bun out bleach out face bwoy already, mi bun out man weh put Chinese language tattoo pon dem neck an’ nuh know de meaning at it. Statements believed to have offended Kartel. After the Dj finish playing, he left the stage in the direction of Kartel and his entourage. According to the Star the selector was seen being hit in the head several times with a bottle.
Jipsy reported that someone told him that Kartel wanted to talk to him. He proceeded over to talk to Kartel where he was hit several times and had liquor douched on him.Kartel recollects the story differently and stated to Star Entertainment that Jipsy wanted to say Hi to him but he was not in a good mood. Kartel explained there were some verbal exchange and he was told Jipsy was hit in the head with a bottle but he never saw what happened. Kartel reports he left the scene immediately after the incident broke out.
There is just something about Kartel’s story that’s just not authentic. Kartel seems to have won public opinion for having bad boy reputation and has won our poll for dancehall’s most notorious bad boy. But does a man of such talent and statue have to go that far to send a message? I speak for a lot of his fans when I say that his popularity is due to his music not his bad boy status. Without his music he would be look at as another delinquent in the streets. I do love and appreciate Kartel’s music but I also have a deep appreciation for freedom of expression, respect of self and love for life. An artist has great power to change things due to the love and admiration of his/her fans and with that said should use their influence in more of a positive manner.
